A.I. dehumanizes and undermines critical thought.
Whatever Google did to our ability to remember, A.I. will do to our ability to think.
Yes, it’s useful. Yes, it’s a tool. Hammers and automobiles are useful tools. The difference is, they expanded our capabilities. A.I. will expand our capabilities for a time, but I can see a day when we’re so reliant on synthetic synthesis that we lose our ability to think altogether.
For instance: I posted something on socials yesterday. One of my interlocutors replied a counter point with what seemed to be A.I. generated content. When I asked him, he said his initial reply was 95% A.I. This time I could tell, but how long until it is indistinguishable?
How long until our most important issues are being discussed and decided by machines and we’re just their waterboys—prompting, copying, and pasting? How long until we stop debating altogether?
There will come a time when “not assisted by A.I.” will be worn like a badge of honor. A.I. is the GMO of the thinking world.
Soon, organic ideas will be produced, bought, and sold at a premium. The questions are when, and will you be ready?
